DELTA, BC - January 08, 2015 /CNW/ - Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada will be hosted by Halifax for this year's annual celebration of hockey across the country. We are proud to announce that Delta, BC will host a live remote for the west coast division of the broadcast in an exciting day of community events on Saturday, February 14, 2015.
South Delta Minor Hockey Association is teaming up with the Corporation of Delta, Scotiabank and Rogers to bring this special day of events to local hockey fans.
"Like many cities in Canada, Delta is a proud hockey town featuring teams and enthusiasts of all ages," said Mayor Lois E. Jackson. "We are so pleased to host Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada in our community, and are thrilled to provide such an amazing event and unique opportunity for our local hockey players and fans."
The day will kick off with a free pancake breakfast, live music and the grand re-opening of the newly renovated Ladner Leisure Centre. All local Delta rinks will be taking part in this national celebration of hockey with games and on ice activities. Every game will be like the big leagues with announcers, guest coaches, live national anthems and plenty of activities to be enjoyed by fans of all ages. Fans will have the chance to meet and get their picture taken with Vancouver Canucks alumni, Kirk McLean. We will also celebrate the many great athletes who grew up playing sports in South Delta, and who then went onto many great careers in and out of sport.
"We are excited to bring the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada celebration to Delta," said Nilusha Alibhai, Scotiabank Vice President of North Coast and Fraser Valley District. "At Scotiabank, we know how much hockey means to Canadians, particularly at the community level, which is why we are proud to support over 5,000 minor hockey teams across the country. We hope hockey fans of all ages are either able to come out to join us on February 14 or tune in from their homes."
An event of this magnitude is not possible without many sponsors that will showcase with a tradeshow in the LLC parking lot, accompanied by live music throughout the day, great food and a Hot Stove lounge. There will be onsite training and conditioning demos from some of the top sport organizations in BC. The South Delta Recreation Centre will also play host to a street hockey/floor hockey tournament for all ages.
Produced by Rogers, the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada all-day broadcast on CBC will include live celebrations from Delta, featuring Sportsnet Central host James Cybulski. The day's festivities will culminate with the Vancouver Canucks taking on the Calgary Flames at 7 p.m. PT on CBC as part of a triple-header featuring all seven Canadian NHL teams in action. For fans in the area, the day will end with a game you will not want to miss as the Vancouver Canucks Alumni face off against the Delta Police at LLC, with Delta Cable providing local coverage.
The day's events are dedicated to supporting athletes daring to live their dream with benefits of the event going to great charities and non-profit organizations, such as Delta Kidsport, Special Olympics BC and the South Delta Minor Hockey Association.
"We look forward to seeing you at this exciting community event to celebrate the power of sport, our great game of hockey and the 'Dare to Dream.' We will see you on February 14th!" Phil Pacaud, Event organizer.
