Scotiabank Announces Appointments to Senior Executive Team

TORONTO, ON - November 04, 2013 /CNW/ - Scotiabank today announced new appointments to its executive management team. Barbara Mason has been appointed to a new role as Chief Human Resources Officer reporting to the President and CEO. James O'Sullivan is appointed to the role of Executive Vice President, Global Asset Management, reporting to Global Wealth & Insurance Group Head, Chris Hodgson.

"Meeting the challenges of an evolving business environment will require that we have the right people in the right roles as we continue to develop our future leaders," said Brian Porter, President and CEO, Scotiabank. "Effective human resources management will be a vital component in our success. Given the increasing complexity in this area, we are creating a new role that dedicates additional senior level talent to this priority." 

Barbara Mason has been appointed Chief Human Resources Officer, effective immediately. All global human resources, communications and marketing functions across the Bank will report to her in this new role. Sue Graham Parker will report to Barb as Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Communications. Sue has been instrumental in developing the strategies we need that build on our human resources foundation. In her new role, Sue will be responsible for the execution of all HR programs globally, and have added responsibility for Corporate Communications. John Doig will also report to Barbara in his role as Chief Marketing Officer.

"Barbara's combination of marketing and communications expertise and her understanding of the retail and wealth businesses across our diverse platform gives her a unique perspective in the role of Chief Human Resources Officer," said Mr. Porter. "In this new role she will oversee global human resources, communications, consumer research and marketing. By bringing together these teams under Barbara's leadership, we believe it will help us to better understand our customers' needs, their perceptions of the Bank and how we can build our talent to earn more of their business, trust and loyalty." 

Barbara has been with Scotiabank for 31 years and is currently Executive Vice President, Global Wealth Management, responsible for profitable growth and development of all Scotiabank's wealth businesses globally. She previously held the positions of Executive Vice President, Wealth Management and Executive Vice President, Marketing, Sales & Service, Canada. She has also held progressively senior roles in marketing and sales and service in Canadian Banking.

In addition, James O'Sullivan has been appointed Executive Vice President, Global Asset Management, reporting to Chris Hodgson, Group Head, Global Wealth & Insurance. This is a new role that brings additional focus to the growth opportunities in our wealth business. James has been with Scotiabank since 1990, with senior leadership roles in Investment Banking, Mergers and Acquisitions, and most recently as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Global Wealth & Insurance.
