Scotiabank Celebrates Women Globally

Five Ways to Mark International Women's Day 2014

TORONTO, ONTARIO - March 06, 2014 /CNW/ -  This Saturday, March 8 is International Women's Day. How are you celebrating women? Scotiabank, Canada's most international bank, is marking International Women's Day with some exciting initiatives around the world and invites individuals across Canada and globally to join them in taking a moment to stop, think, and engage in discussions, to recognize the achievements of women.

"Scotiabank is proud to join countless others celebrating the important advancements of women on International Women's Day," says Barbara Mason, Scotiabank's Chief Human Resources Officer. "This day also reminds us that there is much more to be done in supporting women to reach their full potential. That's why achieving social and economic progress globally is a key driver behind Scotiabank's Bright Future philanthropic program and we're proud to support organizations that share our vision to inspire change for women and girls everywhere."

Scotiabank and its employees participate in, drive and support a number of activities globally to celebrate women and girls. This includes:

  • Scotiabank's sponsorship with Catalyst to support efforts committing Canadian corporations to increase women's board representation;
  • Hosting a panel of speakers from organizations in Mexico to share thoughts on the advancement of women;
  • Scotiabank Chile's 2014 Advancement of Women Award recognizes a local woman for her achievements and represents the values and spirit of Scotiabank Chile's advancement of women program; and
  • A CDN $25,000 donation to Plan Canada's Because I am a Girl, an initiative that provides girls with the education, skills, and support they need to lift themselves, their families, and their community out of poverty.

Here are five ways you can mark International Women's Day 2014:

  1. Stop, think & acknowledge the contributions of women you know who have had an impact on your life. Whether it's your mom, partner, friend, or colleague, take the time to reach out and recognize them.
  2. Get involved - there are many local organizations, charities, and groups who host International Women's Day events. Check out your local paper or go online to see how you can participate.
  3. Donate to an organization that promotes women and girls, or donate your time and sign up as a volunteer.
  4. Be a mentor and invest in women by being a champion and offering your guidance and support.
  5. Spread the word by talking to others about promoting gender equality, raising awareness on a key issue, or sharing your story to inspire change.
