Make Your Neighbours 'Green' With Envy; "Property Brothers" and Scotiabank Show You How

Scotiabank and W Network's Property Brothers Launch the #GREENYOURROOM Contest

TORONTO, ON - May 07, 2014 /CNW - It's high season for home renovation projects across the country and that has Jonathan and Drew Scott of W Network's Property Brothers seeing green.

The real estate and contracting experts have partnered with Scotiabank to launch #GREENYOURROOM, a national contest that will award one lucky Canadian with $20,000 towards an eco-renovation and a one hour consultation with the siblings who are known for getting buyers into their dream homes without busting their budget.

"We are excited to see which room across this country will be the winner of the #GREENYOURROOM contest," says Jonathan and Drew Scott. "If you watch our show you know that we've seen some run-down spaces, so show us your worst Canada! We can't wait to see the room transform into a healthy, vibrant and environmentally-friendly space that adds value to the home."

A recent Scotiabank survey revealed that while two-thirds of Canadian homeowners would consider making their home more energy efficient or environmentally friendly by considering green home renovations, over half have trouble seeing past the perceived price tag, underscoring the need to dispel the myth. "In actuality, a green home renovation is an investment that may provide significant cost savings over time as it can lower your monthly operating costs, while at the same time adding value to the purchase price of your home," says David Stafford, Managing Director of Real Estate Secured Lending at Scotiabank.

"When thinking about financing renovations, it's a good idea to speak with your financial advisor to create a reno budget to determine what you can afford before you price out your project, including contractor fees if required," adds Stafford. "Once the budget is established, a line of credit, such as the ScotiaLine® Personal Line of Credit with VISA card access, is a useful tool for making purchases and paying contractors. All expenses end up on one convenient statement to help you keep track of what you paid for and to whom."

"Scotiabank's commitment to the environment doesn't start or end with the #GREENYOURROOM contest," says Kaz Flinn, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Scotiabank. "Finding ways to reduce our environmental impact is top of mind for us, so we created the EcoLiving program and website -- a resource which provides information on how you can renovate or upgrade your home in a way that saves money by saving energy and reduces your impact on climate change. Visit ecoliving.scotiabank.com and use the EcoLiving Home Energy Savings Calculator to see how much you could save by making a few eco upgrades."
