New Times Set and Record-Breaking $1,150,000 Raised for Charities Through the Scotiabank Charity Challenge
CALGARY, AB - June 01, 2014 /CNW/ - New race times were set in an exciting finish to the 50th Scotiabank Calgary Marathon today, as two elite runners broke course records. Cheered on by thousands of spectators, more than 15,000 runners ran through scenic Calgary neighbourhoods and raised a record-breaking $1,150,000 at press time for 91 charities through the Scotiabank Charity Challenge.
Elite runner Kip Kangogo from Lethbridge, Alberta won the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon with a course record of 2:19:47, beating the old record by three minutes and 1 second. Gela Hailu from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia finished second with a time of 2:19:58. Daniel KipKoech from Lethbridge, Alberta came in third with a time of 2:20:06. Emily Chepkorir of Halifax, Nova Scotia also set a course record of 2:46:21 in the marathon for the women's category, beating the old record by five minutes and 15 seconds. Maria Zambrano from Calgary, Alberta finished second with a time of 2:52:45. Nadine Mueller of Canmore, Alberta rounded out the top three with a time of 3:00:01.

The 91 charities registered in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge raised an incredible sum of $1,150,000 as of press time, surpassing its $1,100,000 target. This outstanding achievement exceeds last year's total of $1,027,000 raised for 76 community charities.
