Running for More Than a Personal Best -- Rat Racers Aim to Make a Difference

TORONTO, ON - June 13, 2014 /CNW/ - Close to 2,000 runners of all ages and skill levels -- many dressed in rat-inspired costumes -- took to the streets and ran five kilometres to build a stronger city in the Scotiabank Rat Race for United Way last night.

Louise Bellingham, Vice President of Marketing at United Way Toronto; Elizabeth Billyard, Vice President of Retail and Small Business Products for International Banking at Scotiabank; and Brent Currie, Vice President of Global Marketing at Scotiabank, joined a large crowd of enthusiastic runners, volunteers and supporters at Nathan Philips Square.

"Today's runners are not only keeping fit, but they're also supporting great causes. Every dollar raised helps ensure vital programs and services are available when people need them most," said Mr. Currie, Co-Chair of Scotiabank's GTA United Way Campaign. "Scotiabank is proud to support this event through our global philanthropic program, Bright Future, so the United Way can continue making a difference in our city."

This year's 14th annual run sold out in a record-breaking five days and featured runners from more than 100 workplaces, as well as a new route up University Avenue. Thanks to the hard work and efforts of all participants, more than half a million dollars has been raised so far.

"The Scotiabank Rat Race for United Way is a great way to bring people together in support of people and families across our city," said Ms. Bellingham. "Those running are making change happen -- their efforts and generosity are connecting people in our city to the resources and opportunities they need to reach their full potential."

Scotiabank is a long-standing supporter of United Way and title sponsor of the race. Since 2001, some 14,000 runners have raised more than $4.5 million dollars for United Way. The funds raised have supported a network of over 200 health and social service agencies that provide services to people and families in need, as well as support United Way's efforts to create long-term change.
