Scotiabank Recognized Again as Leader in Aboriginal Relations

TORONTO, ON - September 26, 2014 /CNW/ - Scotiabank has been recognized by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) for building positive relations with Aboriginal businesses, people and communities.

Scotiabank received The Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) Gold rating which recognizes companies that have demonstrated effective programs and policies to maximize involvement with the Canadian Aboriginal community.

"Scotiabank is proud to be recognized by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business. We understand the need to develop strong partnerships with Aboriginal communities, individuals and businesses," said Brian Porter, Scotiabank's President and CEO. "This recognition acknowledges our commitment and encourages us to continue to strengthen our involvement with the Aboriginal community."

This is the second consecutive time that Scotiabank has been recognized by CCAB at the PAR Gold Level. Scotiabank is one of only four companies in Canada that have been awarded with the distinction in 2014.

"Scotiabank's ongoing support of the Aboriginal community will help ensure that they have the skills and experience needed to fully participate in our growing economy, to enjoy greater economic self-reliance and a better quality of life," said The Right Honourable Paul Martin, founder of the Martin Aboriginal Education Initiative.

PAR provides companies with the ability to conduct a comprehensive self-assessment of their performance in four categories: employment, community investment, business development and community engagement. The results and findings are externally verified and rated by a jury. Gold certified companies exhibit long-standing leadership and sustainability in Aboriginal relations.

"It is through the continued commitment of forward thinkers such as Scotiabank that the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) and the PAR program continue to encourage mutual understanding while building a brighter economic future for all Canadians," JP Gladu, President and CEO, Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business.

The awards were announced at the CCAB's 12th Annual Gala Celebration in Vancouver on September 25, 2014.
