TORONTO, ON - October 14, 2014 /CNW/ - The 2014 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon race weekend officially begins October 16 with City Councillor Mary Fragedakis joining members of the Greek-Canadian community and 8 Toronto running clubs to light the torch for the Marathon Flame Relay. The Flame originates from the Warriors' Tomb at the Battlefield of Marathon, Greece. The Flame represents the Spirit of the Marathon -- of what ordinary people can achieve with dedication, determination and great courage. It promotes participation and fair competition in sport and world peace.

The torch relay will travel along Danforth Avenue between Chester and Pape Avenues, starting and finishing at Alexander the Great Parkette on Logan Avenue. The media and public are invited to join in this free celebration on Thursday, October 16.

More than 26,000 runners from over 50 countries will lace up for the 25th Anniversary edition of the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday, October 19. The 2014 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon will also be the number one opportunity for Canadian Marathoners to qualify for the Pan Am Games marathons next July.
