Canadians Bring Excitement of the Scotiabank Giller Prize Closer to Home

Annual Scotiabank Giller Light Bash in Support of Frontier College Takes Place Across Canada on November 10th

TORONTO, ON - November 06, 2014 /CNW/ - On November 10, book lovers will gather to celebrate the 2014 Scotiabank Giller Prize finalists at Scotiabank Giller Light Bash events across the country. The Scotiabank Giller Light Bash, Canada's most popular alternative Giller party, is held in support of Frontier College, Canada's original literacy organization.

Now in its 13th year, Scotiabank Giller Light parties are held concurrently in six Canadian cities: Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto and Halifax. Combining the taste of the Scotiabank Giller Prize formalities with an affordable price in an exciting party environment, guests await the announcement of Canada's most prestigious book prize by enjoying fun speculation on the book they believe will win and watching the live broadcast of the Scotiabank Giller Prize Awards on the big screen. Since its inception, the Scotiabank Giller Light Bash has raised over $500,000 for Frontier College's literacy programs.

Frontier College President Sherry Campbell explains how literacy affects every part of society, "If a mother can't read a prescription bottle, it can result in a health emergency. If an employee doesn't understand a safety memo or sign, it can affect the lives of other employees. If a young girl's parents are unable to help with her homework because they don't feel comfortable with their ability, that girl can easily fall behind in school, eliminating many options for her future. At Frontier College we're working with the most vulnerable people in our society, improving their literacy and increasing their opportunities."

"We are excited to work with our partners at Frontier College to bring the Scotiabank Giller Light Bash back to cities across Canada," says Jacquie Ryan, Scotiabank Vice President of Sponsorships and Partnership Programs. "These events not only make the Scotiabank Giller Prize more accessible to book lovers from coast to coast, but also support a great cause. We are proud to support Frontier College's important work with their literacy programs and we invite book lovers join our celebrations in the city nearest them!"
