"Rats" Infest the Streets to Strengthen Toronto

Over a thousand race downtown for Scotiabank Rat Race for United Way

TORONTO, June 14, 2012 /CNW/ - It took no time at all for the "rats" to infest the downtown streets tonight in a 5km race in support of the community. The Scotiabank Rat Race for United Way drew over a thousand runners who want to make a difference through the local agencies and initiatives funded by United Way.

"The Scotiabank Rat Race for United Way is a fun and inspiring way we can come together to build a better city," said Louise Bellingham, Vice President of Marketing at United Way Toronto who spoke after the race at Scotia Plaza.

"Every dollar raised tonight will go toward creating opportunities for people here in Toronto. Whether it's helping the unemployed find jobs, supporting newcomers as they settle into their new life, or ensuring young people make a successful transition to adulthood," added Bellingham.

Scotiabank is a long-standing supporter of United Way and title sponsor of the race. Bellingham was joined at the event by Chris Hodgson, Group Head of Global Wealth Management for Scotiabank.

"The energy here tonight is inspiring, and it's clear that everyone is ready to do their part to support our city," said Mr. Hodgson. "Year after year we see United Way and their agencies doing great work in our communities, and Scotiabank is proud to support these important initiatives. The Rat Race is a favourite with Scotiabankers, but I am also proud of the many other employee-led efforts that take place across Toronto."

Pledges raised by participants will support United Way's work to improve social conditions in Toronto so that we all thrive. United Way funds frontline community agencies that help people when they need it most. The charity's work doesn't end there. United Way also funds strategies aimed at strengthening whole communities by focusing on the root causes of problems facing inner suburban neighbourhoods, where services and support aren't easily accessible.
