ScotiaGold Passport Visa Travel Tips Backgrounder
    -------------------------------------------------

TORONTO, June 10, 2010 - Whether Canadians head to the campgrounds, or fly abroad for their summer vacations, Scotiabank provides travel tips and financial tools to meet all their travel needs before they leave home and while they are away:

General Advice

    - Carry a combination of cash, traveller's cheques, credit cards and
       debit cards;
    - Ask your travel agency whether you will require a passport, visa,
       vaccination or any other documents;
    - Ensure you have sufficient insurance coverage for your personal
       situation and that you are familiar with its terms, conditions and
       exclusions;
    - Post-date any bill payments online or through your branch that may
       become due while you are away;
    - Plan for any GIC, RRSP or mortgage maturities that may come up while
       you are away;
    - Take a note of all refund and emergency numbers to ensure prompt
       cancellation and replacement of lost or stolen travelers cheques or
       credit cards;
    - If travelling outside of Canada, it's a good idea to carry enough
       local currency for taxis, tips, buses and telephone calls;
    - Research the local currency and exchange rates to ensure you have
       sufficient currency and travelers cheques;
    - Some countries have departure taxes - it is a good idea to enquire and
       put away the correct amount of cash with your tickets, passport and
       immigration exit card;

    Automated Banking Machines (ABMs)

    - Visit www.visa.ca and click "ATM locator" to determine whether your
       destination has convenient access to ABMs;

    Credit Cards

    - Call your credit card company before you leave to confirm that the
       card will be honoured at your destination;
    - If your card is "turned down" in a foreign country, check to determine
       whether it was turned down or referred, as referred means only that
       additional information is required from the merchant;
    - Record your credit cards before leaving home and know the expiry dates
       and credit limits;

    Cash

    - Do not carry large amounts of cash - keep some in a hotel safe or
       travel wallet;
    - Foreign coins may not be accepted for exchange in Canada, so it is a
       good idea to plan on using them for small sundry purchases, such as
       buying a snack or souvenirs;

    Online and Telephone Banking

    - Using the Internet or telephone while on vacation is a time saving and
       cost-efficient way to access bank accounts and keep your bill payments
       up-to-date; and
    - Some providers allow you to post-date bill payments and fund transfers
       before you leave.

"We advise customers to carry a combination of cash, travelers' cheques, and credit to keep their options open and prevent them from being caught short," said Vivek Chandra, Vice-President, Credit Cards, Scotiabank. "As always, it's very important for customers to report any lost or stolen cards immediately."
