TORONTO, Feb. 6 /CNW/ - The seventh annual Sheena's Place Awareness Breakfast, presented by Scotiabank, will host Harvard University medical anthropologist Dr. Anne Becker who will speak on the subject of Culture, Media and Eating Disorders through her studies of Body, Self and Society: The View from Fiji. Dr. Becker will discuss the impact that exposure to television and other types of media has on eating behaviours of teens.What: Sheena's Place is a community-based, not for profit organization that offers hope and support to individuals and families affected by eating disorders and related issues. The seventh Annual Sheena's Place Awareness Breakfast, presented by Scotiabank takes place during Eating Disorders Awareness Week which runs from February 4 to 8, 2007. When: Friday, February 8, 2007 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Where: Arcadian Court, 401 Bay Street, (Simpson Tower), 8th Floor, Toronto Who: Dr. Anne Becker, Keynote Speaker Bob Magee, Moderator 500 attendees Why: According to Sheena's Place, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses. Anyone can develop an eating disorder regardless of age, race, gender or background, however anorexia and bulimia affect primarily women in their teens and 20s. Studies report both disorders in children as young as six years as well in adults as old as 75. Sheena's Place is focused on the education, awareness and prevention of eating disorders in addition to offering over 50 weekly support groups at no charge. The goal of this corporate breakfast, sponsored by Scotiabank, is to provide the audience with an opportunity for understanding eating disorders, as well as to raise funds for Sheena's Place's ongoing programs.
