ST. JOHN'S, NL, Aug. 13 /CNW/ - Scotiabank today officially announced its sponsorship of Newfoundland's newest and most challenging race, the Scotiabank Cape to Cabot 20 k race, designed to highlight Newfoundland and Labrador's magnificent seacoasts, historic sites and the fortitude of its citizens. The race takes place on October 21, 2007 and has a new start time of 8 a.m. "This race, in its second year is viewed as a community celebration of athleticism brought together by the incredible strength and endurance of its participants," said Francis Power, Scotiabank District Vice-President Newfoundland and Labrador district. "Scotiabank is pleased to be involved in such a challenging race which brings the community together and showcases Newfoundland and Labrador's historic landmarks, rich cultural heritage and history." The race is the newest entry in the Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Association (NLAA) Championship Race Series. It begins at Cape Spear National Historic Site, Newfoundland, climbs 210 metres to crest the Southside Hills, descends again to sea level along St. John's harbour finishing with a 500 meter climb from Signal Hill to Cabot Tower. "This route will test the mettle of any runner - especially the final kilometre in the race," said Race Director Peter Soucy. "The extremity of nature is what makes the Cape to Cabot Race enticing - runners love a challenge. We expect to reach our limit of 250 runners this year." Participants can look forward to a televised event that offers unique perks. The Finisher's Medal, a 3.5 inch Newfoundland-slate disc is a well-earned souvenir for completing the race. Registrants also receive a long-sleeved technical running shirt and can view the race one week later on NTV.
