TORONTO, March 19 /CNW/ - Superstar Annika Sorenstam and Canadian golf favourite Lorie Kane team up to host the Scotiabank Women's Charity Challenge in support of women's charities across Canada. In its second year, the golf tournament takes place on Monday, May 14th, 2007 at the prestigious Magna Golf Club on the Oak Ridges Moraine in Aurora, Ontario. Scotiabank and key presenting sponsors, Rogers, Fidelity Investments, KPMG and Teradata are hoping to exceed the $250,000 raised at last year's event. All proceeds will benefit a host of women's charities across Canada. Last year the recipients included a variety of charities supporting women's shelters, employment services, treatment centres and cancer foundations nation-wide. Both Sorenstam and Kane are key golf professionals that bring their experience, popularity and grace to this truly unique event. Sorenstam is recognized as one of the finest female athletes of all time and is rated one of the best golfers on the LPGA Tour. Kane began her career on the LPGA Tour in 1996 and has four career victories on the Tour. She became a member of the Order of Canada at a ceremony in December 2006. "Annika Sorenstam and Lorie Kane are two of the most generous ambassadors in women's golf and Scotiabank is proud to have them as part of the Scotiabank Women's Charity Challenge this year," said Sylvia Chrominska, Executive Vice-President, Human Resources & Public, Corporate and Government Affairs, Scotiabank. "The importance of this event is significant to the number of women's charities we support. Last year we awarded grants to a variety of charities and we want to continue this tradition of giving." The highlight of the day is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for nine qualifying foursomes to play one hole with Sorenstam and Kane to raise funds for the winner's charity of choice. Each group will include a ranked Canadian Junior Girl golfer and will play for their own pre-selected Canadian women's charities. Sorenstam and Kane will each captain a team throughout the nine-hole event, but will also be competing to win the overall nine-hole match. They will be representing a variety of Canadian women's charities selected by Scotiabank. Scotiabank supports a number of women's charities, including The World Conference on Breast Cancer and YWCA. Most recently a recipient of the 2007 Catalyst Award recognizing the advancement in women and business, and recognized as one of Canada's top 50 employers, Scotiabank is a leader and destination workplace for women seeking careers in the financial services industry.
